BS 7909:2011+A1:2020 — Code of Practice for Temporary Electrical Systems for Entertainment and Related Purposes — requires that all temporary electrical installations for events are designed, installed, inspected, tested and maintained by a competent person. A written scheme of work should be produced before installation begins. Appropriate overcurrent protection, RCD protection, and correct cable selection must be in place, and a completion certificate produced.
BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 (IET Wiring Regulations) — governs all fixed and temporary electrical installations in the UK. Maximum permitted voltage drop is 5% of nominal supply voltage (11.5V on a 230V supply). All outdoor and temporary supplies must be protected by a 30mA RCD as a minimum (Regulation 411.3.3).
HSE Guidance (HSG107) — Outdoor events require a suitable and sufficient risk assessment covering electrical supply, generator positioning, fuel storage, and cable routing. The responsible person must ensure equipment is fit for purpose, IP-rated where appropriate, and PAT tested.

Regulatory Notes
BS 7909:2011+A1:2020 requires all temporary electrical systems for entertainment events to be designed, installed and verified by a competent person. A written scheme of work, inspection records and completion certificate are required.
BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 (IET Wiring Regulations) — maximum voltage drop 5% (11.5V at 230V supply). All outdoor/temporary circuits must have 30mA RCD protection as a minimum.
HSE HSG107 — Outdoor events require a risk assessment covering electrical supply, generator positioning, cable routing and IP-rated equipment. All portable appliances must be PAT tested with current records.
Generator sizing — size at minimum double the peak load to allow for power factor losses, harmonic distortion and motor start surges. Agree sizing with your generator supplier who should provide commissioning documentation.
RCD protection — use 30mA RCDs for all outdoor circuits. Test RCDs before every event. Separate critical circuits so a single RCD trip does not take down the entire event.
Socket loading — plan 13A sockets at no more than 80% continuous load. Use separate protected circuits; a double socket should not be treated as two independent supplies unless confirmed by the venue/electrician.
Power quality — use a stable pure sine/AVR generator supply or suitable power conditioning for sensitive audio and digital control equipment. Avoid sharing DJ/audio circuits with catering, heaters, fridges or motors.
UPS bridge — a correctly rated UPS can protect laptops, controllers, mixers, media players and network/control kit from short dips or changeovers. It is not suitable for running PA speakers, amplifiers, heaters or lighting rigs.
Cable safety — never daisy-chain domestic 13A extension leads for long runs. Use industrial-grade cable of correct CSA with IP-rated CEE connectors. Fully unwind all cable drums before use to prevent heat build-up.
